Agency & Special Product Services is a part of the BCDAD group and is responsible for organizing and managing loan processes on committed deals where the bank is the administrative, collateral and/or depository agent. The Agency Clsoing Associate oversees and directs the workflow of the people and operations that process the bank's agency and bilateral loan portfolio transactions. This individual prepares, reviews and/or approves the work of the loan closers and ensures all daily duties are completed. This is a tactical and transactional role that focuses on day-to-day operational execution, and frequently contributes to broader strategic planning within the area of agency, syndicated and bilateral loan administration. May leads, coaches and train the team's administrators, representatives and analysts. Serves as point of escalation for complex inquiries and issues from internal and external parties. Reports to the Director. The anticipated salary range for this role is between $72,000 and $113,000. The specific salary offered to an applicant will be based on their individual qualifications, experiences, and an analysis of the current compensation paid in their geography and the market for similar roles at the time of hire. The role may also be eligible for an annual discretionary incentive award. In addition to cash compensation, SMBC offers a competitive portfolio of benefits to its employees.


  • Sets policies within the purview of bank and statutory requirements as well as government regulations.
  • Provides day-to-day operational support of existing and new departmental processes and enterprises initiatives.
  • Administers the appraisal/performance process per the performance evaluation standards set by the bank.
  • Supervises and provides technical guidance to the staff, ensuring that all tasks are carried out appropriately, in a timely manner, in accordance with the bank's governance structure, and with minimal risk to the organization.
  • Identifies areas for process improvements and/or value-added functionality, evaluates alternatives and presents options to senior management.
  • Manages special projects, both cross-functional and internal, tied to the bank and/or the loan department's strategy.
  • As one of the key business leads will provide input and feedback for the development of a new databases or functions, inclusive of enforcing procedures in accordance with the bank's and department's governance.
  • Participates in Business Continuity exercises to ensure smooth recovery of applications in the event of unplanned business disruption.


    • Experienced in varieties of loan servicing including all aspects of funding
    • Interpret credit agreements and related documentation
    • Follow instructions very well; detail-oriented
    • Understand all aspects of deal/loan administration functions and task
    • Use of LIQ preferred, but not required, or like loan system
    • Understanding of bilateral and syndicated deal structures
    • Trouble-shoot basic loan related functional problems/issues
    • 5 to 7 years of comparable or relevant experience
    • Experience managing a team of loan specialists in a highly matrixed banking or financial institution is preferred
    • Preferred: BA / BS (or equivalent experience)
    • Degree in Finance, Accounting or Economics or comparable discipline is a plus.
    • MS Word, MS Excel, MS Access, LoanIQ
    • Expert ability to interpret credit agreements and related documentation.
    • Advanced understanding of all aspects of loan or deal administration functions (including all aspects of funding).
    • Functional experience managing processes and projects across multiple business and technical areas.
    • Customer focused team player with expert verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
    • Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with others to set goals, resolve problems, and make decisions that enhance organizational effectiveness.
    • Keen ability to work with a diverse cultural organization across the Americas, Asia and Europe.
    • Ability to set priorities, develop a work schedule, monitor progress towards goals, and track activities.
