Job Description:

The Laboratory Assistant is accountable for the accuracy and reliability of all Anatomic Pathology Specimens accessioning under his/her supervision, both patient identification and specimen site must be accurately entered on a timely manner. Also filling of surgical and Cytology slides and blocks must be done on a daily basis with precision to make sure the material is file according to year and number, as stated onto the block/slides.Essential Functions and Job Responsibilities:Ensures that all accessioning performed under his/her supervision is according to established, approved procedures and quality control policies.Accessions all Pathology and Cytology specimens with proper verification of specimen and requisition information.Print Accession Logs after each specimen collection rounds - discarding the previous log, always keeping the must current log.Prints Cassettes for all specimens as needed.Maintain stock of 10% buffered formalin, alcohol, and xylene in the lab.Performs used 10% buffered formalin Neutralization maintaining proper QA control records.Dispose of specimen per section protocol and maintaining up to date records of specimen disposal.Maintains control of used xylene for disposal in flammable cabinet and maintains good stock of empty containers.File blocks and slides maintaining proper order by year and prefix.Pulls slide from files as plies with all WMG policies and OSHA regulations related to safety, cleanliness and infection control.Required Qualifications:High School degree or equivalentBroad knowledge of medical terminologyAbility to deal with confidential information with the utmost discretionStrong customer service skills are necessary in order to deal courteously and effectively with administration, peers and the publicSufficient technical ability to be able to troubleshoot independentlyCompany OverviewWestmed Medical Group is a large, award-winning multi-specialty medical practice, with headquarters in Purchase, NY.
