The U.S. Secret Service is seeking retired (CSRS/FERS) individuals to support our integrated mission and immediately impart their knowledge and experience to the current workforce. If re-employed under a Dual Compensation Hiring Authority with an OPM approved salary off-set waiver granted to the Secret Service, annuitants are able to earn their full salary and their full annuity without penalty.

The USSS employs retirees under one of the Dual Compensation Hiring Authorities below:

Dual Compensation Hiring Authority

  • Earn Full Annuity and Full Salary
  • Earn Annual Leave and Sick Leave
  • Work Full-time, Part-Time, or an Intermittent work schedule (determined by supervisor)

Dual Compensation Hiring Authority - COVID-19 Response

The selectee will serve as an Investigator in the Office of Investigations, within a field or resident office nationwide. Typical work assignments include:

  • Independently conduct pre-employment security interviews and background checks that help to ensure the safety and security of the Nation.
  • Reviewing and finalizing record searches of applicants at law enforcement agencies, court houses, mental health, financial and educational institutions.
  • Compiling information in a standardized reporting format.

Travel Required

Occasional travel - Occasional domestic and foreign travel may be required.

Conditions of Employment If selected for this position, you may be required to:

  • Obtain and maintain a Top Secret Tier 5 clearance. For more information visit OPM Mythbuster Page.
  • Submit to a drug test prior to your appointment and random drug testing while you occupy the position.
  • Undergo occasional travel.


Basic Qualification:

You must demonstrate at least one (1) year of the defined Specialized Experience and meet the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Individual Occupational Requirements (IOR).

Specialized Experience

GS-13: You qualify for the GS-13 level (starting base salary of $78,681) if you possess one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level performing duties such as: conducting face-to-face interviews and background checks for pre-employment selections; obtaining and reporting factual information for background investigations that determine employment suitability and security clearance eligibility; finalizing pre-employment casework according to applicable rules and regulations.

Special Priority Selection rights under ICTAP: Submit a copy of your agency notice, copy of your most recent performance appraisal (with at least a satisfactory rating), and your most current SF-50 noting position, grade level, and duty location. To be considered well qualified, you must meet the specialized experience and OPM's Individual Occupational Requirements as listed in the Qualifications Section.

This announcement is being advertised for multiple locations; therefore, the locality adjustment will be added to the basic salary based on selected locations.
