Job Description:
Position SummaryAs an integral member of the Nursing Leadership
team, the Clinical Nurse Scientist is responsible for the overall
quality and operations of the Nursing Research Program. The
Clinical Nurse Scientist exhibits technical and functional
expertise in research and evidence-based practice (EBP) through the
development of protocols, hypotheses, and educational curricula.
The Clinical Nurse Scientist coordinates daily activities of a
designated study or group of studies and maintains industry
relationships, and guides training of nursing and other clinical
staff on good clinical practice and external regulatory agency
requirements. The Clinical Nurse Scientist collaborates with other
departments to ensure the nursing research and evidence-based
practice process is utilized efficiently and is directed at
achieving optimal outcomes. Essential Functions and
Responsibilities Includes the Following:Understands and adheres to
the WPH Performances Standards, Policies Behaviors Develops
scientific protocols and generates hypotheses for research
inquiries independently and in collaboration with nursing staff.
Provides technical and functional expertise in research studies and
EBP projects Oversees/coordinates research and EBP projects as
defined by the ANCC to obtain and maintain Magnet Program
Designation Collaborates with the Magnet Program Director to
support Magnet writing Creates and implements research and EBP
education core curriculum for staff Drafts research policies with
departmental leadership Prepares manuscripts for publication in
peer-reviewed journals and scientific meetings and disseminates
findings Uses statistical software to analyze study data and
interface with biostatisticians for analysis; engages leaders from
various specialties to develop collaborative multidisciplinary
research Oversees the administration of assessments as assigned and
as related to study protocol Collects data, confers with PI, and
forwards results to sponsors (internal or external) Interfaces with
external agencies; organizes all phases of grant process for
submission to funding agencies as necessary Oversees clinical
research staff performing clinical functions on study participants
as needed Liaises with agencies, pharmaceutical companies,
laboratories, and equipment and supply companies as needed Oversees
availability of supplies and/or equipment for studies Identifies
and pursues extramural funding opportunities through pursuit of
grants and clinical trials; collaborates with physicians,
investigators, and other healthcare providers regarding subject
care as necessary Operates under limited guidance and work
assignments involve moderately complex to complex issues where the
analysis of situations or data requires in depth evaluation of
variable factors Mentors and supports staff and colleagues in
writing for publication, poster presentations, EBP projects
Maintains file of research studies and EBP projects Participates in
the Institutional Review Board Attends Management/Leadership
meetings as scheduled/required Is responsible for participation in
committees, task forces and projects as appropriate Works
collaboratively with all levels of the hospital interdisciplinary
team and promotes the team concept Demonstrates positive customer
service and assures that staff adheres to the Customer Service
Behavioral Standards Is supportive of hospital initiatives and
projects and functions as a positive change agent Collaborates with
all members of the health care team, including the CNO and Vice
President of Nursing Is a member of the Nursing Leadership team
Participates in the development, education, implementation, and
utilization of the nursing theoretical practice framework Performs
related duties as required Education Experience Requirements
Current NY State RN License required BSN, MSN, and PhD required
Receive nursing related national certification, Clinical Research
Coordinator (CRC) or Certified Clinical Research Associate (CCRA)
within 3 years of hire/transfer Minimum of 3 yearsexperience in

the hospital switchboard, saved on a disc. Must be able to move
about the department and hospital constantly while attending to
needs of patients, visitors and staff. Requires continuous
communication with patients, staff and visitors of all educational
levels. Requires frequent use of computers and other office
equipment. Must be able to rapidly assess and respond to
situational needs of patients, staff and visitors. Must be able to
adapt to a high stress environment with frequent interruptions.
