Job Description Summary
Position Summary
The Director of Human Resources sets the tone for Sonesta's Culture
of Caring. We expect leaders to focus on creating amazing moments
for guests and team members and dig deep to find ways to create
success for their team.
The Director of Human Resources is responsible for directing and
ensuring the effective and efficient administration and management
of the entire Human Resources function. This includes recruitment,
total compensation, training and development, employee relations,
labor relations, leave management, reward and recognition, health
and safety and performance management.
The Director of Human Resources works with the Executive Committee
to carry out daily operation activities and is responsible for
providing leadership, strategic support, consultation and direction
to the entire Executive Committee pertaining to employee and labor
relations.
Additionally, the Director of Human Resources is expected to
communicate Human Resources related topics to all employees and to
ensure the overall positive employee experience. This role
primarily works with senior management to develop employment
processes that support business goals and objectives.
Sonesta managers are charged with providing strategic vision,
ensuring tactical execution, and actively managing their department
to achieve the company's revenue and profitability goals and
objectives.

Job Description
Work Environment
This position works mostly in a service environment with a high
number of administrative tasks.
Physical Demands
- The person in this role may be exerting up to 50 pounds of
force occasionally, and/or 20 pounds of force frequently or
constantly.
- The person in this role may be carrying, lifting or pulling
items weighing up to 50lbs.
- The person in this role will be frequently standing up,
bending, climbing, kneeling and moving about the hotel.
Expected Hours of Work
- Must be flexible to work variable days of the week to include
weekends and holidays.
- Must be flexible to work variable shifts (days, nights,
overnights).
Travel
Occasional to attend company sponsored meetings and/or events.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Human Resources/Business or related
field.
- 7+ years of Human Resources experience in compensation,
employee relations, talent acquisition & development, performance
management and/or strategic planning preferred.
- Professional Human Resource Certification preferred but not
required.
- Understanding of and previous experience in a union environment
a required.
- Previous union hotel human resources experience highly
preferred.
- Knowledge of advanced recruiting methods and techniques
required.
Principle duties and responsibilities (Essential Functions)
include:
- Operational/Functional:
- Recruit and hire all roles within the hotel utilizing
progressive and innovative recruiting techniques while being
mindful of time, cost and quality. Ensure all employees possess
proper employment eligibility documents.
- Previous experience with recruitment CRM technology
preferred.
- Workday and/or HRIS experience required.
- Plan, direct, supervise and assign work of the Human Resources
Staff.
- Conduct, document and analyze employee exit interview, turnover
statistics, absenteeism reports to identify trends, training needs,
supervisory issues in order to improve employee engagement and
retention.
- Manage and resolve complex employee relations issues. Conducts
effective, thorough, and objective investigations. Makes
recommendations to Corporate Human Resources regarding follow-up
actions.
- Analyze wage and salary reports and data to determine a
competitive compensation plan and individual compensation
recommendations.
- Develop and oversee the maintenance and communication of
employment records as required by law or policy. Ensure compliance
with federal, state, and local legal requirements and the Fair
Labor Standard Act. Consult with Corporate Human Resources, and
when appropriate, with legal counsel, to ensure consistent
application of law and corporate policy.
- Design and facilitate effective training and development
programs for employees. Ensure that all managers and supervisors
are trained on the progressive discipline process, performance
management process, Union Awareness, and other related management
programs and initiatives.
- Direct and coordinate the hourly and management performance
evaluation process. Assist managers in completing the annual
performance reviews and ensure that merit increases are equitable
and processed in a timely manner.
- Perform administrative duties to include processing worker's
compensation and unemployment claims as well as the maintenance of
employee records and HRIS systems.
- Coordinate and administer locally developed special recognition
programs.
- In a Union environment, manage labor relations and represent
the hotel in grievances, mediations, arbitrations and contract
negotiation meetings. Ensure all departments are knowledgeable of
and in compliance with the terms of all collective bargaining
agreements (CBA).
- Deliver outstanding experiences to guests, partners, and team
members.
- Perform any other job-related duties as assigned.
- Strategy and Planning:
- Lead the hotel in employee engagement strategies and activities
to ensure the hotel is continually assessing and improving its
management and leadership practices to ensure a highly engaged
workforce.
- Set departmental goals and strategy to align to company mission
and departmental goals and targets.
- Financial Management:
- Control labor costs and expenses.
- Develop human resources annual budget and other financial
measures of the Human Resources department
- Manage staffing levels to ensure that operational needs and
financial objectives are met.
- Actively participate and advise in the budget and forecasting
processes which support the overall objectives of the hotel.
- Managing your Team
- Coach Managers to create and maintain a work environment with
high morale and productivity. Conduct new employee orientation to
familiarize employees with Company values, standards, policies,
procedures, rules and other employee programs.
- Promote teamwork and quality service through daily
communication and coordination with other departments. Key
departmental contacts include all hotel staff, Corporate Human
Resources and Corporate legal.
- Ensure team members receive proper training applicable to their
position and career aspirations.
- Responsible for monitoring, measuring, and recognizing
performance of team members who directly report to the role and
indirect reports.
- Support, comply and promote company initiatives, policies and
guidelines.
- Handle employee issues in a professional and timely manner.
